MIQUEL NAVARRO

Miquel Navarro is a Spanish painter and sculptor. He was born in Mislata
(Valencia), Spain, in 1945. He also continues to live in the same
neighborhood where he was born. From his studio in the Morería he has
projected his art to the five continents
He carries out his artistic training at the San Carlos School of Fine
Arts in the city of Valencia.

In 1973 he exhibited his first ‘Ciutat’ with clay. Later he began to use
iron, since it allowed him to make larger and more resistant sculptures.
In 1980 he held his first exhibition in New York, followed by Paris,
Berlin, California, Mexico, Florence, among other places. Also in 1989
he did the set design for two plays.

In January 2008 he was elected a full member of the Royal Academy of
Fine Arts of San Fernando, filling the vacancy left by Juan de Ávalos
due to his death.

The Valencian artist’s candidacy was presented by academics Francisco
Calvo Serraller, José Luis Sánchez and Julio López.

On November 29, 2009 he read his entrance speech at the Royal Academy of
Fine Arts of San Fernando, it was called ‘Childhood Games, where art is
forged’ and at the Navarro he made references to three of his most
admired artists , Julio González and Joseph Beuys (to whom he dedicated
some poems), and Giorgio de Chirico.

In 2005, the IVAM received an important donation from the artist Miquel
Navarro as a result of an exhibition held by the museum dedicated to his
work.

The legacy has more than five hundred works by this artist, representing
each of the periods of his career.

His work on the street
On the monumental aspect of him, his sculptures have been installed in
public spaces in Valencia, Castellón, Bilbao, Vitoria, Madrid, Brussels,
Murcia, among other cities.

Due to his theme and the fact of being on the public highway, his works
are commonly renamed with popular or relatively curious names.
